Choosing the right knapsack sprayer can save you time, labour and money for years. With so many types on the market — manual, battery and engine-powered — it helps to match the sprayer to your crop, your farm size and your budget. This guide walks through the key decisions.

1. Decide on the power type

The biggest choice is how the sprayer is powered. Manual (hand-operated) sprayers are the most economical and need no fuel or electricity, but require continuous pumping and suit small areas. Battery operated sprayers use a rechargeable 12V battery for effortless, steady spraying and are ideal for small to medium farms and gardens. Engine/power sprayers produce high pressure for fast coverage of large farms and tall crops, at a higher cost and with fuel running costs.

2. Match tank capacity to your area

Larger tanks mean fewer refills but more weight to carry. A 16-litre tank is the common all-round choice; smaller tanks suit gardens, while larger capacities help on bigger plots. Think about how far you walk between refills and how much weight is comfortable on your back.

3. For battery sprayers, check the battery and motor

Battery capacity (measured in Ah) decides how long you can spray on one charge — a 12Ah battery runs longer than an 8Ah. Motor type matters too: a single motor is fine for most crops, while a double-motor (high-pressure) model gives stronger spray and better reach for tall crops.

4. Consider your crops

Low crops like vegetables and pulses spray easily with battery or manual sprayers. Tall or dense crops, orchards and trees need higher pressure — a double-motor battery sprayer, a power sprayer, or an HTP set for the tallest trees.
